What is a Social Worker? Registered Social Workers are governed by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), which ensures that standards of practice and ethics are adhered to.
Social Workers practice in many capacities, those in private therapeutic practice focus on supporting individual and family social and emotional wellbeing. Social Workers in private practice generally have a Master's of Social Work (MSW) degree or higher.
So I think I am ready to begin counselling. What happens now ? Typically Joelle begins with a 20-minute consultation to determine the counselling services sought as well as provide an explanation of how the counselling process works. This will help determine if there is a "fit" for all parties or if a better suited service might be sought. This consultation is free of charge.
My child/adolescent is in need of counselling. What can I do? Parents, caregivers and young people are welcome to consult about their concerns to determine if counselling would be useful.
During the initial meeting input is invited from relevant sources as the therapist reviews consent, confidentiality and the terms of service.
Counselling is most useful when it is voluntary. Sometimes young people who express hesitancy about counselling report that they find meetings helpful and not necessarily what they expected.
What can I expect during a counselling session ? Sessions are conducted face to face at Joelle's Toronto based office. Sessions are pre-booked at a mutually convenient time following the initial consultation.
The session will begin by mutually mapping topics for discussion or follow up. The session is a therapeutic conversation guided by intentional questions. Typically sessions last 50 minutes although alternative arrangements can be made.
How long does counselling last ? Counselling/therapy is process that is unique to the participant. There is no predetermined number of sessions that suits all problems.
This is something that is mutually considered at the beginning of therapy and evaluated on an ongoing basis. For some problems, a single consultation may be of use. For others, ongoing session for an agreed upon period of time (e.g. 5 weekly sessions) with evaluation are considered.
How much does a Social Work cost? Different therapists charge different fees. A counselling session with Joelle costs $150.00/session. A sliding scale fee may be available in the event that an individual or family is in need of service and finds the standard rate prohibitive.
Mediation fees are $200.00/session. Additional fees apply for agreement drafting.
How do I pay for sessions? Payment is required at the beginning of each session by cash, cheque or e-payment. An electronic receipt will be issued.
Is there coverage for sessions? Some health plans cover counselling/psychotherapy with a registered Social Worker. You may also claim Social Work services on your tax return under medical expenses. Please check with your provider to determine your coverage.
